To permit the bells to be removed, a hole had been cut in the roof of the tower and, on the day, a huge crane was set up in front of the church, blocking two of the three northbound lanes of Streatham High Road! One by one the bells were lifted out, lowered to the ground and then loaded on to a waiting lorry.
