Our CMS link Mission Partner, Toks Akinbadewa

Some photographs shown to us by Toks on her visit in October 2004 (second set)

Scroll down to see more pictures. There are brief explanations at various points down the page. You can also go back to view the first set of photos.

Here we see some of Toks's colleagues and the staff and students from the School of Nursing, where she teaches. There are also a couple of views of the hospital buildings; in the first of these, we see the bedding rolls brought by patients' relatives! Patients have to supply all that is needed for their stay, including food, and usually a relative will come and cook it for them in a kitchen provided by the hospital. The relatives stay in special huts and put their bedding outside to air during the day!

Photo of gloves being sterilised, Kagando Hospital, Uganda (KagHospO.jpg) Photo of workshop at Kagando Hospital, Uganda (KagHospY.jpg)

To save money, latex gloves and needles are not disposed of after use - they have to be reused. The picture on the left above shows them drying after being sterilised.

The next two pictures show the workshops at the hospital; the workshops make and maintain many of the things the hospital uses - you can see some crutches in the picture on the right above. They also provide services to the local community and so earn revenue for the hospital. It is here that trailers are made for bicycles - see the previous page of pictures.

The hospital also has a vegetable plot which is used particularly to teach parents how to grow nourishing food for their children - many of the patients in the children's ward are suffering from malnutrition.

Photo of cattle at Kagando Hospital, Uganda (KagHospZ.jpg) Photo of beekeping project at Kagando Hospital, Uganda (KagHospZC.jpg)

The hospital has to be self-sufficient and, as well as the vegetable plot, keeps cows and pigs to provide milk and meat. There is also a beekeeping project. All of these are at least dual purpose - as well as providing food for the hospital these projects provide an example and teaching for patients and their families. If a family could own a cow and grow fresh vegetables the poor diet and malnourished children would be a thing of the past.

Spiritual matters are not neglected, and the hospital has a chapel, where the banner in the last picture hangs. We are hoping Toks will send us a translation!
