Immanuel and St Andrew's Web Archive 2002 - 2003

This page is an archive of news and other items that appeared on this site during 2002-2003 and which may continue to be of interest although no longer current or topical. The items on this page come mainly from the 'News and Notices' page; the list below summarises the contents. There are also links to a pages covering past events, etc in the left column. Note - the Web Archive contains only items that have appeared in some form in the past on the website, which was started in 2002. The History page provides access to some other (generally older) information and historical material. For later material in the Web Archive go to the main Web Archive page.

Weddings 2003 (archived 10/01/2004)

During the year our congratulations and best wishes went to a number of members of the church or members of their families who got married: Niki Kakora and Michael Shiner, James Benjamin and Angela Grant, Denvor Charles and Angela Scott, and Becky Scott and Edward Magee.

NOVEMBER 2003

Christingle Service (archived 22/01/2004)

At the Christingle Service on 30th November the collection for the Children's Society raised £205.22, which will be increased by claiming tax back. Thank you to all who came and contributed.

OCTOBER 2003

Stewardship Sunday (archived 29/11/2003)

Sunday 12th October was Stewardship Renewal Sunday, the day each year when we ask members of Immanuel to review their financial giving to the church and to join the stewardship (planned giving) scheme if they are not members already. Members who were in church that day took away with them their Stewardship Packs, and packs for other members have been distributed. Members are asked to take time to think and pray about their response, complete the form in the pack and then bring it back to church as soon as possible. Thank you.

If you didn't get a pack, or have lost it, you can see something of Immanuel's finances by going to the finance page, where you can also download a stewardship response form and read most of the information. In fact - if you don't get a pack there's still no excuse - what you need to know is also there on the web!

But stewardship is not only about money. We also take the opportunity to ask people to consider what they can give of their time and talents to serve God in the church. There are many ministries and tasks with which help is needed; many thanks to all those who have already volunteered to help. We are still looking for leaders and help with the following:

If you can help please sign up on the list in the entrance hall. Training will be given where appropriate.

SEPTEMBER 2003

Parochial Church Council (archived 10/01/2004)

The PCC welcomes Tony Emett as a new co-opted member, following its September meeting. At the September meeting the PCC heard about progress with plans for our 150th Anniversary celebrations and agreed to invite Luke Hughes and Partners to produce some designs for the new furniture (see July meeting). The Council also discussed the current crisis in the church over sexuality. A wide variety of viewpoints on the latter issue were expressed. It was agreed not to sign up to the inclusivechurch.net petition as a PCC, although some individual members had done so. (There is a link to the inclusivechurch.net website in the 'Links' page.)

Redecoration of the church (archived 10/01/2004)

Following the damp proofing in the wall behind the organ in the church carried out in August 2003 the whole church has been redecorated. The area on the other side of the wall affected will be repainted at a later date.

Hacked! (archived 03/10/2003)

Apologies to anyone who got a shock when attempting to visit this website on or around Saturday 6th September 2003. Instead of details of Immanuel and St Andrew's appearing when clicking on www.immanuelstreatham.org.uk a page bearing a peeping eye graphic and the message "Hacked by Wildkorsan" appeared! Apparently a 'hacker' gained access to a server at web-at-work.com, who host our domain name (immanuelstreatham.org.uk) - although not the website itself - and a large number of websites were affected. 'Hacking' is a crime and web-at-work are investigating in conjunction with the police. Fortunately, once discovered, the problem was quickly put right.

JULY 2003

Annual accounts 2002 (archived 29/11/2003)

Immanuel's audited Annual Accounts for 2002 were received at a special Parochial Church Meeting on 20th July. Susan Field, our auditor, was reappointed for the coming year. It had not been possible to receive the Accounts at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting in April, as the audit was not complete. Copies of the Annual Report and Accounts are displayed on the notice board in the entrance hall and anyone requiring an individual copy may obtain it from the treasurer, David Gray.

Parochial Church Council (archived 10/01/2004)

At the July meeting of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) it was agreed that, to mark Immanuel's 150th Anniversary, the sanctuary furniture (apart from the communion table) would be replaced. The present clergy stalls, credence table and lectern would go and the PCC are exploring designs for their replacement. The communion table is to be retained as a link with the past - it was presented to the church by the builders of the new church building in 1988 and was made from one of the doors of the old church. The present clergy stalls, which came from the old St Andrew's Church, are extremely uncomfortable as well as being very heavy to move, and are overdue for replacement by something more suitable for the job! It is intended to meet at least part of the cost from a legacy received from the estate of a former member, Phyllis Corblet.

School leavers 2003 (archived 29/11/2003)

At the School Leavers' Service on Sunday 13th July Immanuel and St Andrew Primary School said farewell to the members of year 6, who leave to go to their new secondary schools next term, as well as to members of staff Lisa Freeman and Carole Shepheard and school governor Grace Lespierre. Carole Shepheard, who is retiring after 14 years as deputy headteacher, preached the sermon. The year 6 leavers were each presented with a New Testament donated by the church. We wish all those who have left the school God's blessing in the new phases of their lives which are just beginning.

Brownies (archived 19/07/2003)

The Brownie Pack that meets in our hall every Monday is in danger of closing because they need a new leader. If any member knows someone who may be able to help they are asked to contact Kara Standing. [The pack has now closed.]

JUNE 2003

Trade Justice Lobby (archived 07/11/2003)

A number of members of Immanuel attended the Trade Justice lobby on Saturday 28th June 2003. Events were organised in most parliamentary constituencies and in Streatham our MP Keith Hill met representatives of churches, aid agencies and other interested organisations as well as individual constituents at a meeting at St Matthew's Church in Brixton. The message put over was that trade must be fair rather than free - in particular, of course, fair to third world and developing countries. Keith Hill was happy to endorse this message. After the meeting we crossed to Windrush Square to demonstrate the imbalance and unfairness of trade rules - with giant pairs of scales and a heavily biased game of snakes and ladders. For more information on Trade Justice go to www.cafod.org.uk/tradejustice or to www.tjm.org.uk.

Rita Sanders (archived 10/07/2003)

Rita Sanders, a long standing member of Immanuel, died peacefully in Norbury Hall after a long period of illness on 21st June 2003. Her funeral was on 1st July at Croydon Crematorium, and was conducted by Revd. Mary Watts. Please continue to remember the family in your prayers.

Confirmation 2003 (archived 07/11/2003)

Our Confirmation Service on Wednesday June 11th was a truly joyous occasion. We were hosts to folk from St Peter's Streatham and we were privileged to have the ministry of St Peter's' choir. Rt Revd Richard Cheetham, Bishop of Kingston, confirmed 8 members from Immanuel and one from St Peter's, and received one member of Immanuel into the communion of the Church of England. Please pray for them all as they start this new phase of their Christian lives. Our thanks to all who helped make the service so memorable and especially to Marion Gray and Wendy Aird who led the confirmation course.

Serving the Church in Mission and Ministry (archived 19/07/2003).

Our church needs people to help plan and arrange events and activities, from maintenance of the building to mission in the parish and overseas. If you would like to offer some time (at least one evening every two months) through serving on one of the Church Teams, please speak to the following people:

Additionally, we are always in need of people to support the teaching of children and young people in our 'Seasons of the Spirit' groups. Training and support will be offered. Please speak to Simon Butler or Angie Grant if you are interested. You will need to be willing to undergo a 'Child Protection Check'.

MAY 2003

Christian Aid Week 2003 (archived 07/11/2003)

In Christian Aid Week this year we raised the grand total of £1111.47. Thanks again to all who helped this year, either with the door-to-door collection or with collecting tins at Sainsbury's.

APRIL 2003

Annual Meeting 2003 (archived 07/11/2003)

At the Annual Parochial Church Meeting on 29th April 2003 it was announced that Immanuel's electoral roll now stands at 182 - a 25% increase on the previous year's figure of 146. 63 members live outside the parish boundary. At the meeting Angela Grant and Julie Rothwell were re-elected to the PCC and Molly Dale was elected in place of Judy Scott who decided not to stand again. Congratulations to them, and thanks to those who also stood for election but were not successful. Names of all those on the PCC are on the 'Who's Who' page.

At the Vestry Meeting before the Annual Parochial Church Meeting Angie Sharma and Jane Fletcher were re-elected as Church Wardens for another year.

Lent Appeal 2003 (archived 20/10/2003)

Lent was a long while ago, but you may remember that we held a Lent Appeal for gifts to support the Church Mission Society (CMS), and in particular our Mission Partner, Toks Akinbadewa, as well as the Bishop’s Lent Call. The Lent Call was to go towards a number of causes:

(You can find out more about the Lent Call by visiting the Lent Call section of the Diocesan website.)

The money took a little while to come in, and then we had some tax to reclaim from the Inland Revenue, but the gifts were eventually sent off during the Summer.

Altogether a total of £1067 was given. The PCC had agreed to match this, but as there was also £255 of tax to reclaim the PCC agreed instead to round the total up to £2500. £1250 was accordingly sent to CMS to support Toks and another £1250 to the Lent Call. Many Thanks to all who gave!

[From the previous notice: During Lent we asked everyone at Immanuel to think about making charitable giving part of their daily discipline. Immanuel has a long tradition of giving to charity, particularly to mission work, and this year we are using Lent as a focus for this in place of the Gift Day we have held for many years. We are supporting our mission partner, Toks Akinbadewa, through the Church Mission Society (CMS) and also supporting the causes chosen for the Bishop of Southwark's Lent Call. For more about CMS and Toks see the Mission Partner page.]

ITEMS FROM 2002

TRIO - The Responsibility Is Ours - an update.

Back in October 2002 Immanuel and St Andrew's held a campaign called TRIO, which stands for The Responsibility Is Ours - the responsibility for ensuring that our church is properly financed. That responsibility is ours - the members of Immanuel and St Andrew's.

It was estimated that £1387 per week was needed to run Immanuel and St Andrew's in 2002 (and more would be needed in 2003), but the main sources of income, regular giving and hall hire, only came to about £1009 - a difference of £378. Members were challenged to consider how much they gave each week and not only to see if they could pledge more but also to keep their giving in line with their income, so that if they got more the church got more.

Over 90 responses have been received, which is a pretty good result in itself. When all the new pledges are fulfilled the church should receive an additional £250 per week (estimated at around £320 with tax recoveries). This works out at about £2.80 extra per response (£3.60 with tax recoveries). This is not quite as much as was hoped for but is well on the way, and income from collections and standing orders has already started to increase.

So thanks are due, not only to those who are increasing their giving but also to everyone who supports the church financially. If you missed TRIO - perhaps you have only joined us recently - and would like to make a regular gift to Immanuel Church please contact the treasurer for a form. All pledges are kept in strict confidence.

Sunday Morning Service - big changes from Advent Sunday.

From Advent Sunday, 1st December 2002, Immanuel and St Andrew's began using a new pattern of teaching material called "Seasons of the Spirit" On the first and third Sundays of each month the morning begins with seminar groups for everyone, including adults, coming together after about 45 minutes for coffee and then worship. To give us more time the morning service starts at 10:00am instead of 10:30 - and this applies every week, not just the first and third Sundays. On the other Sundays there will normally be an "all-age" communion service with children, young people and adults worshipping together.

Please pray for all the work involved in the new arrangements and for those who will be leading the new material. We hope the new material will help us to both learn and worship better. Click here to go to the Services page to see how the new arrangements work each week.

"Seasons of the Spirit" has been developed by an international group. Immanuel is one of the first churches to have adopted it in Britain so far - and one of the few to use it for all age groups including the adults. For more information visit the "Seasons of the Spirit" website at www.spiritseasons.com

Monday Night is Church Night.

Other changes have been introduced into our parish life from the beginning of December 2002, and the most obvious of these is the designation of Monday night each week as "Church Night". The main weekday activities of the parish will all take place on Mondays, with a regular pattern.

A new activity is a regular weekday service twice a month which is specially designed for those unable to be at church on Sunday. This will take place on the Mondays following the first and third Sundays each month (usually these will be the first and third Mondays, but not always!). The service will be a repeat of the Seasons of the Spirit seminar and service from the Sunday before.

On the second Monday either the Parochial Church Council will meet (odd months) or the PCC Teams (even months), so that this day each month is set aside for church "business". The fourth Monday will be "Service" evening - not a service of worship but opportunities for serving others. The visiting team will meet then, and there may be other activities - including, possibly, practical maintenance work around the church!

New Readers for Immanuel.

Photo of Readers (1767.jpg)

Three members of Immanuel - Marion Gray, Jenny Hull and Steve Morris - were admitted to the Office of Reader and licensed to work in the parish at a service at the Cathedral on Monday 28th October. For each of them this represents the culmination of three years of study on the Readers' training course, and they now join Simon Butler, Wendy Aird and existing Reader David Gray in preaching and leading worship as well as undertaking other pastoral duties in the parish and possibly beyond.

We thank God - and them - for their hard work over the last three years and for their commitment. Please pray for them as they begin their new ministries.

The photograph shows new Readers Marion Gray (left) and Jenny Hull with long-serving Reader David Gray following Marion's and Jenny's official "welcome" on 3rd November 2002. Steve Morris was welcomed in December.
