Immanuel and St Andrew's Web Archive 2004 - 2005

This page is an archive of news and other items that appeared on this site during 2004-2005 and which may continue to be of interest although no longer current or topical. The items on this page come mainly from the 'News and Notices' page; the list below summarises the contents. There are also links to pages covering past events, etc, in the left column.

Note - the Web Archive contains only items that have appeared in some form in the past on the website, which was started in 2002. The History page provides access to some other (generally older) information and historical material. For other material in the Web Archive go to the main Web Archive page.

NOVEMBER 2005

All Souls Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving (archived 30/07/2006)

This Service (at which we will have an opportunity to remember departed loved ones) will be taking place in church on Wednesday 2nd November 2005 at 7:30 pm. Cards are available for the names of loved ones to be remembered. Please do fill one in and even if you are not able to be there on 2nd November a candle will be lit in memory of the named person at the service. (It is expected this service will be repeated in future years.)

Harvest Service and Supper - 'Love in a box'. (archived 14/01/2006)

Over 80 'Love in a Box' shoe boxes, filled with gifts to children who would not normally receive presents at Christmas time, were donated at our Harvest Service on 9th October 2005 and in subsequent weeks. In November they were collected by Mustard Seed Relief Mission. Many thanks to all who contributed. For more information visit the Mustard Seed Relief Missions website.

A number of people took photographs at our very successful Harvest Supper on 8th October. Two that were taken by Vera Simpson are on this page, and you can also see them enlarged. Unfortunately we are unable to use all she took as they show some of our children and young people close up. The ones we have used show some of them as part of a larger group, but we still have to obscure facial detail for child protection reasons.

OCTOBER/JULY 2005

Farewell to Revd Wendy Aird (archived 30/10/2005)

Wendy sent grateful thanks for her leaving present (received at her farewell event) and said she looks forward to a shopping spree when she has a new house! She has now taken up a 'house for duty' post, at St John the Divine, East Chevington, Northumberland for a five year period and is living in the vicarage there, as from 12th October 2005. Wendy will be working with Mike Dixon, the Vicar of St James, Shilbottle, sharing the work of both parishes. Her licensing service was at 8:00pm on Friday 14th October at St John the Divine, when the Archdeacon of Lindisfarne gave her the bishop's licence. Jenny Hull was able to attend to represent us.

You can still see photos taken on 31st July when we marked Wendy's last day as Assistant Curate of Immanuel - go to the special 'Farewell to Wendy' page.

AUGUST 2005

New on the Website.. (archived 30/07/2006)

What's new this time is something old! We published a commemorative booklet for our 150th Anniversary - but it was not the first commemorative booklet we have ever had. There was one for our centenary, in 1954, long out of print, of course, but you can now read it by going to the History page. It not only provides historical details, many of which were in the recent booklet, but gives an insight into what Immanuel Church was like 50 years ago, when our hall had not yet been built and the school was roughly where Sainsbury's checkouts are now, surrounded by a rubber factory!

JULY 2005

A message from the Metropolitan Police Service, which they have asked us to deliver (following the tragic bombings on London on 7th July).... (archived 02/09/2005)

Since the bombings of Thursday 7th July the need to work together has never been more apparent and it is this that will defeat those who wish to strike fear at the heart of our community. We in Lambeth will continue to celebrate our differences and diversity which act as a shield to protect us against those who wish to undermine and attack us. Lambeth police will continue to work with you to ensure Lambeth remains a safe place. Together we must do all we can to prevent extremists influencing our communities and in particular our children. Our prayers and thoughts remain with those who have been directly affected by this atrocity. There are challenging times ahead but by embracing diversity and working together as a community we will achieve the level of peace and harmony that we all so desire.

ICE - In Case of Emergency (archived 02/09/2005)

We are helping to publicise a new scheme which has been introduced to encourage mobile phone users to store emergency contact details in their phones. It has increased relevance in view of the recent terrorist atrocities in London, but may help in any emergency or accident. It has been launched by the East Anglian Ambulance Service with the support of others including Falklands war hero Simon Weston and in association with Vodafone's annual life savers award.

The scheme, known as ICE, the acronym for 'In Case of Emergency', is designed to enable the emergency services to use your mobile phone to trace your next of kin or other vital contacts if you are involved in an accident or other emergency (and unable to tell them yourself). The idea is that you store the word 'ICE' in your mobile phone's phone book and against it the number of the person you would want to be contacted 'In Case of Emergency'. Ambulance or hospital staff will then be able to trace your next of kin and contact them. It is such a simple idea and anyone with a mobile phone can do it. It could really help in an emergency, and in some cases save your life. If you want to save more than one contact you can use ICE1, ICE2, etc.

Website information (archived 29/07/2005)

Regular visitors may notice that the main links to other pages are across the top of the page rather than at the top of the column to the left, although they are repeated at the bottom of the column. You will find this is so on some other pages too. This change was necessary on some pages which contain predominantly photographs, as they did not display correctly in Netscape, and the arrangement is being used elsewhere. The immediate advantage is that any other items in the left column are made more prominent by being slightly nearer the top of the page. It's also possible to repeat the links easily elsewhere on the page, so that navigating to another page does not always involve returning to the top. If you like it or hate it, do let the webmaster know!

Other recent changes to the website include several additional photos associated with the History page - including photos of the old Immanuel church and of our stained glass.

Changes made earlier in the year included a change to the typeface on our website, putting some of Tok's pictures on the site (see the Mission Partner page) and adding some links from the history page to the Lambeth Landmark archive on the web, where you can see some more pictures of the old Immanuel Church, going back to the late 19th century. There is also a new page called 'View from the Top', where you can see some views from the top of our tower.

MAY 2005

The Vacancy 2004-2005

May was the last month of the vacancy which began in July 2004 when former vicar of Immanuel and St Andrew Simon Butler left us. Our archive includes the Vacancy Page which gave details of the process of finding his successor and the arrangements which were made for ministry in the parish in the meantime.

Return Visit - Revd Brian Allen

Some members of Immanuel will remember Brian Allen, who, as one of our young people, worshipped with us in the 1970s. Brian is now Revd Brian Allen, assistant curate at Christ Church, Gipsy Hill, and he paid a return visit to us to lead our 12:00 noon communion service on 8th May 2005. Brian was particularly interested to see (and to wear!) our millennium vestments, which were purchased with a legacy from the late Len England - another former member of Immanuel. Len was married to Brian's mother, Jean - yet another 'old' member.

APRIL 2005

Elections at our Annual Vestry and Parochial Church Meetings (archived 21/05/2005)

At the Annual Vestry and Parochial Church Meetings held on 24th April after morning service:

We are grateful to all who stood for election and all who have served and retired. At the service before the meetings presentations were made to Angie Sharma, and also to Revd Wendy Aird, in appreciation of the enormous amount of work they had done, particularly during the vacancy.

The Church Clock - Petition (archived 30/07/2006)

Maintenance for our clock has for many years been paid for by Lambeth Borough Council as it is a public amenity. Just recently they have withdrawn funding - despite agreeing it is still a public amenity - owing to budget cuts. We have a petition to ask them to restore the funding. It is in the foyer - members are asked to please sign it if they feel strongly about this. In the meantime we have had to get it fixed at the PCC's expense - the clock had suffered recently because of some power failures and was running slow. (The good news was that, with a bit of help from local councillor John Kazantzis and the Streatham Town Centre Office the petition was successful and funding was restored!)

Immanuel and St Andrew Primary School - new Foundation Governor (archived 21/05/2005)

The PCC is very pleased to announce that Catherine Pearson is to be our new Foundation Governor at Immanuel Primary School to replace Paul Mercer who is moving away with his family. We will still need another governor in September to replace Giles Mason when he retires. Heartfelt thanks go to both Paul and Giles who have been very effective and hard-working governors over the past few years.

MARCH 2005

Frank Ranson (archived 08/04/2005)

Frank, for many years a member of Immanuel, died on Saturday 19th March, aged 95. Frank had continued as Stewardship Envelope Secretary until he was 93! The funeral was on Friday 1st April 2005 in church.

FEBRUARY 2005

Violet Simpson (archived 08/04/2005)

Violet Simpson (sister of Vera), died on 20th February. Her funeral was on Tuesday 8th March in church, conducted by Revd Mary Watts.

Special Events in 2004

Simon Butler, our vicar since 1997, left us in the early summer of 2004. You can see some pictures of his farewell service on the page which deals with the vacancy which arose as a result. Our Archive also includes an Immanuel 150 page that records what happened through the summer of 2004 to celebrate our 150th anniversary and a just 10 page with information about the just 10 south london mission which ran from 11th-25th September 2004. There are also pages featuring the Streatham Justice Fair in October which, though not an Immanuel event, is supported by people from Immanuel each year and provides an opportunity to learn about Fair Trade and other justice issues - see also our Fairtrade Stall page.

NOVEMBER 2004

Confirmation 2004 (archived 30/10/2005)

Immanuel members Liz Owens and Laura Reynolds were among those confirmed by Rt Revd Richard Cheetham, Bishop of Kingston, on 21st November 2004 at Christ Church, Gipsy Hill.

See the photos in the left column, or Click here for enlarged versions.

Our CMS Mission Partner, Toks Akinbadewa (archived 30/07/2006)

Toks, now back in Uganda, contacted Wendy recently and thanks us all for the gifts of balloons we sent for the children. We will be sending the money raised by the Junior Church sponsored silence to her hospital soon - if anyone else wants to make a contribution please contact the treasurer, David Gray (020 8764 5303). So far just over £120 has been raised.

Most of the pictures Toks showed us when she came to see us are now on the website - you can look at them by going to the Mission Partner page.

SEPTEMBER 2004

Rosemarie Mallett

On Sunday 26th September we said farewell to Rosemarie, who the following Sunday was ordained deacon to serve as assistant curate at Christ Church, Brixton Road (between Brixton and Kennington). Rosemarie was presented with a stole designed by the church textile designer Juliet Hemingray, who designed the banners over the altar. The stole design is based on our banners.

Barbara Sanders.

Barbara, a long standing member of Immanuel, died suddenly on Monday 6th September 2004 and the funeral was on Friday 17th. Please continue to remember the family in your prayers.

A big thank you...

...to all those who pledged to give a little more each week to help the church out of its financial difficulties. We estimated we needed about £100 a week more, and about £68 a week extra has already been pledged.

Website News

Most regular visitors will already be aware that the layout of our website changed recently. There are a number of new pages; as well as the page about Simon's departure and the vacancy, there are now pages about our banners and our altar and altar cross, where you may discover things about our church you may not have known! And, if you haven't yet discovered them, there are also the new pages which are a vital part of the new layout - the 'What we do', or Ministry and Mission page, the General information page and the Site Map page, which should help you find your way around.

AUGUST 2004

Congratulations to the Rutherfords!

Congratulations to Caroline and James Rutherford on the birth of their new baby daughter, Susanna, a sister to Thomas, on Wednesday August 4th. James, Caroline and family spent several weeks shortly afterwards in the United States while James performed there. They returned to us in November, just in time for the final part of our 150th anniversary celebrations.

JULY 2004

Open Day 2004

Thanks to all who were involved in the Open Day held as part of our 150th Anniversary celebrations on 3rd July. Aside from the community spirit it engendered and the public relations boost the church received, nearly £150 was raised from the sale of the very tasty home-made cakes in aid of Toks, our CMS Mission Partner, and the Fairtrade Stall made more than £100.

New Rural Dean (archived 26/08/2004)

The Revd Robert Titley, vicar of All Saints, West Dulwich, has been appointed Rural Dean of Streatham in place of Simon Butler. He was licensed at St Leonard's, Streatham on Sunday 19th September 2004.

APRIL 2004

Joyce Bennett (archived 30/05/2004).

Joyce, a member of Immanuel for many years, died peacefully on 20th April 2004 after a long and difficult 30 year battle with Parkinson's disease. Joyce's funeral took place on 30th April.

MARCH 2004

Gift Aid and Envelope Secretaries (archived 11/04/2004)

New people have kindly agreed to take on these roles. Now that Ben Scott has moved away Caroline Cooper has taken on the job of Gift Aid Secretary. If you have any queries about Gift Aid payments or would like to fill out a form so that the church can claim back tax from the Inland Revenue, she will deal with your requests in confidence.

Frank Ranson retired as Envelope Secretary at the beginning of the year. Richard Owens has taken over the role and will be responsible for running the envelope scheme. Again, if you have a query about envelope giving or want to join the scheme you can discuss it with him in confidence.

Our thanks go to Ben and Frank for all their work, which in both cases goes back over many years.

Fairtrade Fortnight (archived 11/04/2004)

FAIRTRADE Mark (fairtradelogo.jpg)

Christian Organisations marked Fairtrade Fortnight from March 1st to March 14th 2004. Although the fortnight itself is over we can still make an effort to promote fair trade and help third world producers. Here are some ways we can help:

Lent at Immanuel (archived 11/04/2004)

During Lent our preaching and education on Sunday mornings focussed on how we can know God's purposes for the world better and how we can share our faith with others. We explored our call to share our faith and witness to others during seminars and sermons using the 'Seasons' format (seminars on 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month) as part of our preparation for the Just Ten mission in September 2004. You can find the details on the Keeping Lent page, which will remain available on the site for the time being.

FEBRUARY 2004

A23 changes (archived 27/03/2004)

Many thanks to those who returned questionnaires on the consultation on the 109 Bus Route proposals, which affect the road outside the church, the A23. As a result of our lobbying, this revised proposal has been published: "At Immanuel Church, there will not be a recessed parking bay as originally planned. The original parking box will be lengthened to 28 metres and the start of the northbound bus lane moved to the northern end of the box. The parking box operational hours will be unchanged and the central reservation will be reduced in width to accommodate the larger box." In short, a result!

Greenvale Residential Home, Voss Court (archived 27/03/2004)

On the first Sunday of each month a small team of people from Immanuel visit Greenvale to hold a short Communion Service for the residents and staff. This team is getting smaller, and we would like to invite others (particularly younger people) to think about coming along, even if only two or three times a year. Please contact Wendy Aird (020 8671 2592) if you are interested.

Ben and Judy Scott (archived 13/02/2004)

On Sunday 8th February we said farewell to Ben and Judy, who were leaving Immanuel and moving to Farnham. They have been members since their youth, so it was a special day for them and a sad day for us all.

JANUARY 2004

Seasons of the Spirit/Worship Pattern Review (archived 27/03/2004)

By January 2004 we had been using 'Seasons of the Spirit' now for just over a year and had conducted a review [at the end of 2003], with a survey of members' views. In place of the 'Seasons' Seminar on Sunday 18th January 2004 there was a presentation and discussion on the review, when the results of the survey were made known, together with ideas for the future. Visit the special "Seasons" Review 2003 page for an outline of what was planned. The main elements of this new programme effectively started on 29th February 2004.

New Archdeacon of Lambeth (archived 22/01/2004)

The Revd Chris Skilton, formerly Team Rector of Sanderstead, began his new work as Archdeacon of Lambeth during January 2004.

Minority Ethnic Vocations Roadshow - Sunday 25th January 2004. (archived 31/01/2004)

We were joined on this Sunday by Canon Stephen Roberts and the Minority Ethnic Vocations Roadshow. Various people spoke about their own sense of God's calling in their lives and, whilst the expressed focus was upon members of minority ethnic communities, we thought also about the issue of vocation as it applies to each and every one of us. There is literature available for those who want further information.
