This page is an archive of news and other items that appeared on this site during 2006 and which may continue to be of interest although no longer current or topical. The items on this page come mainly from the 'News and Notices' page; the list below summarises the contents. There are also links to pages covering past events, etc in the left column.
Note - the Web Archive contains only items that have appeared in some form in the past on the website, which was started in 2002. The History page provides access to some other (generally older) information and historical material. For other material in the Web Archive go to the main Web Archive page.
Lisa Johnson, daughter of Carl and Eunice, and mother of Seth in year 2 at Immanuel and St Andrew Primary School, died suddenly on 14th December. The Johnson family worshipped with us for some years in the 1990s and are well known to many members and friends. Carl was one of our Readers. Friends at Immanuel share the Johnson family's shock and grief and extend their deepest sympathy. The family now worship at Streatham Baptist Church, Lewin Road, where Lisa's funeral was held on Friday 29th December and was attended by a large congregation including many past and present members of Immanuel.
The total collected for Gift Day on Sunday 19th November 2006 was £1720.46, including £135.66 in the children's 'Faux Fireworks' and £40 from the sale of Euros. When tax recoveries and matching pound for pound by the PCC is added, this becomes £4000!
We sent £1600 to CMS (the Church Mission Society) in support of Toks Akinbadewa, our Mission Partner with the society, while another £1600 has been sent to for Kagando Hospital in Uganda where Toks worked for almost 6 years.
For more information about CMS you can visit the CMS website.
The remaining £800 from Gift Day has been sent to Emmaus South Lambeth in West Norwood. Emmaus communities offer homeless people a place to live where they have the support of the community and meaningful work to do. The West Norwood project, Emmaus South Lambeth, is a new one which is being set up. They already work from shops in Knight’s Hill and building has started on their new premises where the community will be based - see the pictures below. For more information you can visit the Emmaus website.
At the Carol Service we collected £94.55, which was added to the £800 and sent to Emmaus. At Midnight Communion and on Christmas morning we collected £190.17 in the loose cash which, in line with our usual practice, has been passed to our vicar, Elizabeth, for her 'discretionary fund', from which she is able to help some of those who come to her attention whom she believes to be in genuine need.

Our photos show (right) the shops in Knight's Hill, West Norwood, from which Emmaus South Lambeth work and (below) their new building under
construction - also just visible on the right of the passage at the
side of the shops in the top photo.

Simon Butler and David Isherwood, past incumbents of Immanuel, were installed as new Honorary Canons of Southwark Cathedral at Evensong on Sunday 10th December 2006 at 3:00pm in the Cathedral. Their appointment recognises the tremendous work each of them has done for the church and the Diocese. They remain in their current roles but also act as 'ambassadors' for the work of the Cathedral in the Diocese. Congratulations to both of them!

As was announced on 10th December, Barbara Grieves, sadly, is unable to continue as churchwarden because of personal commitments. She has submitted her resignation to the Bishop and he has accepted.

Our new Altar linen and other items donated for use in our services were dedicated on 26 November, the feast of Christ the King and brought into use at our Christmas services. Our photo shows the items by the altar at the service on 26th, with the linen and the small cross with matching candlesticks on the left table and, on the right, the glass cruets (for water and wine at communion), the lavabo and (in the small black case) oil stocks for oil used at baptism and ministry to the sick. We are most grateful for the gifts that have made these purchases possible.

On Monday 23rd October 2006, at the annual Readers' licensing service in Southwark Cathedral, Marion was commissioned in her new role of Director of Reader Selection for Southwark Diocese by Bishop Tom. A number of members and friends from Immanuel were present. The photos shows Marion with her commissioning document from the Bishop and (below) with members and friends at the cathedral.
Marion's new job involves running the selection days at which potential Readers are selected for training - and also training the selectors who will interview the candidates. She regards it as an opportunity to promote Reader ministry in the Diocese. She will continue as a Reader at Immanuel.
And then, further to her appointment, we are pleased to announce that Marion is now Dr Marion Gray, having been awarded her PhD in systematic theology at the end of October. Congratulations to Marion!

The Rutherfords (James, Caroline, Thomas, Susannah and dog Rosie) are now happily settled in their new home in Suffolk, albeit on a temporary basis, while they look around for the 'ideal' home. They send everyone at Immanuel their best wishes. James has been very busy and has hardly been at home since they moved. The really exciting news is that he entered the International Wagner Competition in Seattle in August 2006 – and WON. So he is now getting to be a big name as an opera singer in the US as well as here. He also gained rave reviews for a performance at the end of the recent Edinburgh Festival. Fortunately for the family he will be at home for most of the autumn, singing in a number of concerts, including the annual Christmas performance of Handel’s Messiah at St John’s Smith Square on 23 December. Other than that, Thomas has now started full-time school, and looks very smart in his new uniform. Caroline is looking for a nursery for Susannah, and enjoying taking Rosie for long walks in the woods near their home.

Regular visitors to the website may have already come across the new May we help? section. This part of the website is being developed as a selection of resources which we hope will help members and others with various aspects of their Christian lives. As well as help with subjects such as prayer and the Bible it is hoped also to include practical information about services, worship, church organisation and other issues that people may feel confused about. At present there is only a limited amount of material available - it just brings together some items produced by the webmaster or already available on the website - but it is intended to have much more. Suggestions for material - and offers of contributions - from members of the church are welcome!

On 15th July at Immanuel, Hannah Hall, a member of the church for many years, married Jim McLean, who is a member of the Baptist Church in nearby Hambro Road, in the presence of a 'capacity' congregation of their families, friends and members of both churches. Our congratulations and best wishes to them both! As well as the photo on the left we have a few more photos of Hannah and Jim - Mr and Mrs McLean - at their wedding.

On 11th June 2006 nine children were admitted to Communion. During the previous three months they had been taking part in a series of teaching sessions in which they explored the meaning of the meal which Jesus gave us – as a way of making his presence real to us and to strengthen us as we seek to serve him day by day.
The children were each supported by a sponsor whose role was to stand alongside them as they were admitted to Communion and befriend them in their Christian journey until they are ready to make the commitment of their faith at Confirmation.
Please pray for these children and their sponsors:
For Child Protection reasons it is not possible to show the photos of the group on the website.
At Pentecost (4th June 2006) we released balloons carrying messages and the church address and phone number. One of them was found in Exeter - and another in France!
The sharp-eyed among regular visitors will have noticed a change in the appearance of our website in recent weeks. We are working on a 'house style' for use in all church documents, and the website is moving towards adopting the same 'house style'. In particular, the heading 'Immanuel and St Andrew' will appear at the top, in blue where colour is available and in a decorative typeface (not yet finally decided which!). Some changes have been made throughout the site, such as background colours, and several pages have had more detailed amendments, but the process is by no means complete. Some details have yet to be finalised, and everything could change again!

This year we collected £749.50 for Christian Aid, which is a very gratifying amount. Thank you to all those who stood in Sainsbury's, dug deep into their pockets and/or delivered and/or collected from door to door. There are 'Thank you' cards for all who collected, saying how much each of you raised.
Some members may remember that Toks, our link mission partner working at Kagando Hospital in Uganda with CMS (Church Mission Society), wanted something called a suction machine for the children's ward where she is in charge. And they may also remember that, a long time ago - in November 2004 in fact - the Junior Church raised the money for it. They held a sponsored silence one Sunday morning - and raised over £120!
The good news is that Toks has now got the suction machine, paid for by the money the Junior Church raised! You can read the full story - as it unfolds, because it isn't over yet! - by going to a special Toks news page which also has photos which Toks has sent us and extracts from her e-mails.
You can learn more about Toks by going to our Mission Partner page, where you can also read or download her "link letters". A new link letter for May 2006 has just arrived. The latest ones have her telephone number and e-mail - perhaps someone else would like to get in touch.

At our Annual Vestry and Parochial Church Meetings on 30th April 2006 Angie Grant and Barbara Grieves were elected Churchwardens in place of Jane Fletcher and Jenny Keene, who were retiring after 4 years and one year respectively in the roles. Jenny 'moved sideways' to become senior Deputy Churchwarden and was elected to the PCC as an ordinary elected member. Laura Reynolds was also elected, and Julie Rothwell re-elected, as ordinary members. Emma Cromwell and Grace Lespierre had stood down early from the PCC to concentrate on other things, and we had, as a result, still two vacancies for elected members. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting received the Annual Report of the PCC for 2005, the Accounts for 2005 (duly examined and approved), a report on the proceedings of the Deanery Synod and reports from the vicar, the retiring Churchwardens, the PCC teams and Junior Church. Copies of these are available from the Parish Office.

Please continue to remember in prayer those of our church who were confirmed by Rt Revd Richard Cheetham, Bishop of Kingston, on Sunday 26th February 2006:
In addition, Julia Lloyd was confirmed by Rt Revd Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark, on Easter Eve (15th April) at the Cathedral as she was unable to be present on 26th February.
For Child Protection reasons it is not possible to show the photos of our Confirmation group on the website, but copies can be obtained from David Gray.

We regret to announce that Maurice Smith died on 16th December 2005, and his wife Margaret Smith a couple of weeks later on New Year's Day 2006. Maurice and Margaret had been associated with Immanuel for a great many years, and will be particularly remembered for their contribution to the development of work with young people, both in our own youth centre and in the wider Knights Association of Christian Youth Clubs covering Streatham and Clapham. Their funeral was held in Immanuel Church on Monday 16th January 2006 followed by a reception in the hall. Martin and Arnold Smith, their sons, were pleased to see a very large number of friends, church members and well wishers at the funeral and reception. Please continue to remember Maurice, Margaret and the family in prayer.
Following discussions with the Ministry team and Church Wardens, and with the support of the PCC, we have agreed to alter the way we use the 'Seasons' Sundays - usually the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month.
From 15th January 2006 we will be using the 'Seasons' teaching material, which folk find valuable, within the main service of Holy Communion rather than as a separate seminar prior to the Holy Communion Service. In effect this means that the 'sermon slot' will be slightly longer and we will work into the worship a 'comfort and coffee' break, in the middle, drawing everyone back together for the Peace and the sharing of Communion.
All Junior Church members will start in church with the adults for a couple of worship choruses and the setting of the theme, and then go to their various activities. They will come back to worship with the adults at the Peace.
For everyone this means that the church service starts at 10:00am. If you come at 11:00am you will have missed most of the worship!
This change is experimental for the first part of the year and we may find that it is not what we need at Immanuel. However, it is being made because of the mixed and predominantly negative response to the seminar format that has developed. It is obvious that we need to do something about that and this is our first attempt at getting it better. We want to know how people feel about it so, having given things time to settle for a few weeks, members are asked to speak to Elizabeth or members of the PCC and say whether they think our worship has improved or not!
[Note. Following further discussion with the PCC, after Easter 2006 the new pattern was adopted as the normal arrangement for every Sunday, except for the 2nd Sunday of the month, when we continue have an all-age Service of the Word without separate Junior Church groups. However, starting in May 2006, the Holy Communion service on the 2nd Sunday of the month moved to 9:00am (instead of 12:00 noon). You can view the Parish Life Programme ('Seasons') page as it was (archive) before these changes, and which is now part of the Web Archive.]
