The dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, who is also recalled in the red background,
symbolic of fire.

The only clues to the identity of the figures in the panels are the symbolic 'creatures' with them. Tradition links the four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, with the four living creatures of Revelation ch 4 v 7 - lion, ox, human or angel and eagle. Unfortunately, tradition is not consistent as to which creature repesents which Evangelist, but the first panel shows an angel - usually the symbol of Matthew - and the third an ox - usually the symbol of Luke. An eagle - usually the symbol of John, although it can be of Mark - appears in the second panel, but there is no obvious symbol in the fourth. Curiously, although since the upper floor was put in the panels are now approximately at eye level and can be seen easily, originally they would have been at the top of a tall window which could only be viewed from a steep angle and would have been very dificult to view properly.
